Nerdist Podcast Live - kinda fail
Jan. 29th, 2012 07:59 pmI looked forward with GREAT anticipation to the live taping of the Nerdist podcast that I attended last night in San Francisco. I listen to the podcast religiously, I think Chris Hardwick is adorable, and the other live shows I've heard were all pretty good. This one started 10 minutes late, but the backdrop of the stage was a big screen on which they showed the twitter feed for #nerdistsf, which was hilarious, as people in the audience were clearly trying to out-funny each other.

The standard procedure is for Chris and the two guys he does the show with to warm the audience up with some stand-up. Matt Mira's and Jonah Ray's sets were not so great; Chris was fantastic and by the end he had made a fan of the friend I brought with me (who had never heard of him before).
Then they started the podcast and DAN HARMON (of Community fame) was the special guest. That was fantastic... until he opened his mouth and told us he was blind drunk because he had been told to get there early and had nothing to do while he waited so he just started drinking. Chris was able to get him talking about some interesting moments from his career and he told a few good stories about Community, but then he would periodically go off on something ridiculous and sometimes offensive and you could just see the pain on Chris's face as he tried to figure out how to rein the guy in. If it had been in the studio, they could have just shut it down but I'm sure he didn't want to do that in front of a ballroom full of people who had paid $30 to see the show. So it just went on...
I am really curious to see if it actually gets posted as a podcast episode, because I'm not sure anyone else needs to be subjected to Mr. Harmon. That said, it was a fun evening and I still think Chris is adorable.
